Senator Schimpf weighs in on Quincy Veterans' Home hearing
Senator Paul Schimpf statement following the Joint Senate/House Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing about Legionnaire’s Disease at the Quincy Veterans’ Home:
“Today’s testimony by Directors Dr. Nirav Shah and Erica Jeffries demonstrated that both are personally and fully invested in making sure the Quincy Veterans’ Home is safe for residents. In hindsight it’s easy to judge actions when you have the benefit of all the facts, but the Illinois Departments of Public Health and Veterans’ Affairs didn’t have that luxury when dealing with the outbreak of Legionnaire’s Disease.
It’s also clear by the testimony that it’s difficult to strike a balance between releasing information that’s accurate and giving out uncertain details that could lead to a panic. I believe the decisions made were reasonable, and after careful research, including a visit to the facility and my participation in in the hearing, I feel that the Quincy Veterans’ Home should remain open. This is an exceptional facility that is an asset to our Illinois veterans and their loved ones.
I look forward to continued discussions about how to ensure the health and safety of our veterans going forward.”
