SCHIMPF WEEK IN REVIEW MARCH 20 - 24
MURPHYSBORO, IL - As part of the in-district work period, State Sen. Paul Schimpf (R-Waterloo) had legislative appointments and meetings in six out of the eight 58th District Counties.
On March 22, Senator Schimpf and fellow Senator Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg) visited Shawnee High School in Union County. The two Senators visited as part of their efforts to learn more about the infrastructure needs of their respective districts.
Shawnee School District serves Jackson, Union, and Alexander Counties along the Mississippi River. The school district's students have been working on an ongoing levee education project for seven years, which they have highlighted the area's need for improved levee conditions. The school district is at the intersection of the Big Muddy and Mississippi Rivers. In recent years, the Army Corps of Engineers decertified the Big Muddy levees making them ineligible for federal funds.
The levee system in the area was constructed in the 1950s. Most levee systems have a "life expectancy" of 50 years and as a result the aging levees of the Big Muddy pose serious threats to communities like Grand Tower. The Senators concluded their visit by touring some of the decaying levees near Grand Tower. They hope that possible levee upgrades could be funded through grant opportunities or an Illinois-based capital construction plan.
Senator Schimpf also spent part of the week following up on his commitment to area veterans. He attended a March 23 Veterans' Administration Town Hall in Mt. Vernon. The Senator had the opportunity to speak with local veterans about their concerns over healthcare and other state-level benefits.
The Senator completed his week with local leadership meetings in Ina and DuQuoin.
